FOOL Banner Contest

Sharpen your pencils, get your brushes, paints and materials ready. We’re going to have a banner contest. That’s right, at Fruits of Our Labour May 17-20, 2019 we will be looking to see your best work on display helping to make the atmosphere more period and much more colourful. Bring out your Banners, Standards, Flags and Gonfalons, put them on display and over the weekend our judges will be wandering the event site checking them out and prizes will be awarded Sunday evening.

Prizes, did we mention there will be prizes?? You betcha there will.. each category as listed below will be awarded a prize for the best entry based on the rules listed below ..

RULES:

General Rules: All entries will comply with the following general rules.

-Any type of banner, standard, flag or other similar vexillium type item will be allowed.

-All entries must have been created by hand by or for the individual or group entering the item (no commercially made entries allowed.)

-Any material, fabric, medium or construction technique will be allowed.

-Entries need not be new or specifically made for this contest, any of the entrant/groups past work may be entered.

-All entries must be displayed in a manner or style conducive to that found in period for a similar item.

-All entries will be displayed either in a camp setting for those entrants camped for the weekend or in an area to be set aside and identified for those staying in the lodges or day trip visitors.

-All entries will be judged on the following criteria.

Overall Visual Impact: the WOW factor the judge sees when viewing the banner

Heraldic/Vexellological accuracy: does the item follow general heraldic/flag rules for uses of colours and charges for the style/type of banner etc.

Material/Techniques Used: does the material / technique suit the style/type of banner used. Is it in a period style for the materials used etc.?

Degree of Difficulty/Degree of Skill Exhibited: how complex is the design, material choice etc. to the overall finished project and effort required to complete the item, the overall skill, finish and technique shown by the entrant.

Specific Rules.

Best Individual Entry:

-Individuals may enter multiple items of a similar or different style or type up to a maximum of 5 items.

-Each individual entry will be judged on its own merits as per the rules listed above.

Best Youth (under 16 years) Entry:

Open to Youth under the age of 16 years.

-Entry will be judged based on all of the general rules as listed above.

-The entry must have been designed and executed by the youth with a minimal amount of guidance and input from a parent/adult.

-Make sure any youth entry is identified (small sign or card attached) so the judges can identify it as a youth entry.

Best Group Display:

-Group Displays may be entered by Families/Couples, Cantons, Baronies, Households, Casual camping groups, Guilds or any other formal or informal group as desired by the entrants.

-Group Displays may consist of multiple items belonging to the group as a whole up to a maximum of 5, plus individual items up to a maximum of two per member of the group. *Individual and youth entries as defined above may also be included in group displays up to a maximum of 2 per individual. Please make sure any individual/youth entries you wish judged as such that are also part of a group display are identified as such and point this out to the judges when they are examining your displays.

-Group Displays will be judged based on all of the general rules listed above plus the following added criteria:

-Continuity: how well the overall effect of the display goes together based on period and style of the items displayed or blending of diverse periods etc.
