In only a few hours learn how to cut and lace your own pair of period Romanian leather shoes.\u00a0 Using only a punch and knife students can create functional and authentic Balkan moccasin\/bag shoe that is actually quite easy and comfortable!<\/p>\n

Children are most welcome, under 12 require an adult to help as there is some work with sharp objects and may need some strength to cinch the lacing.<\/p>\n

Who am I, and what am I doing here?!!\u2019 Developing your Persona in the SCA. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Depending on how you play our game, you may want to developed a persona, which can help to determine how you live your Scadian life. Lord S\u00e9amus will lead a discussion on building a good foundation, including culture, names, language, status, clothing, food and more. There will be some handouts, but bring along a notebook and pen!<\/p>\n

Silk Painting Basics: 2 x 1 Hour sessions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Learn the basics of silk painting using a period resist technique (modern materials will be used for participants safety). You will receive a supply kit containing 1 Tube of Gutta (resist), 1 Paint Brush, 1 Square of Silk Habotai approximately 10X10\u201d and one hand out of instructions. Paint and other incidental supplies will be provided by the instructor. Students must supply a piece of artwork (a simple line drawing not too complex) of their heraldic badge or some other idea of your choosing (contact instructor for tips and help in this area if needed). You will end up with a silk painting of about 8\u00d78\u201d. This finished product meets the dimensions for Countess Marioun\u2019s Big Pennsic Banner Project if anyone is interested in adding to the finished banner.<\/p>\n

Providing Air Support in a Melee: Introduction to Combat Archery<\/strong><\/p>\n

This class includes a discussion of the historical use of archery and crossbow units to support melee battle and the conventions of combat archery in the SCA. We will discuss authorization requirements in Ealdormere, equipment, and ammunition.<\/p>\n

Bee-Ware: A historical and modern class on threats to our furry flying friends, the honey bee<\/strong><\/p>\n

This class will be primarily on threatsto honey bee colonies in period and modernly, how those threats are met. We will be viewing period art, showing what was captured in period to defeat various threats. There will be a number of demonstration items including a modern langstroth hive, a recreation of a medieal log hive, as well as a surprise showing of the current biggest threat to honey bee populations in Ealdormere (Varroa mites).<\/p>\n

Flatbreads <\/strong><\/p>\n

Flatbreads, or unleavened breads, are known through many different cultures and many different times. It feels like every culture has a different take on them.<\/p>\n

How do the different ingredients affect taste, rise, and cooking? I don\u2019t know but let\u2019s find out together.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll be looking through the lens I know best from the Anglo Saxon period.Various period appropriate flours, liquids, salts, and add-ins will be available. Students will create their own recipe, build it, and then cook it over the open fire using Viking age period frypans. As many as time allows.<\/p>\n

Butter and fresh cheese will be available for us to add to our fresh bread.<\/p>\n

Students will be cooking over an open flame. A full wool over layer is highly encouraged! Please don\u2019t wear synthetics. All other risks associated with fire, burns and heat to name two, come into effect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How did people in the Viking Age decide what was for dinner and which pot to use? Join us for this interactive class on this everyday process.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This class with be split into 3 parts;<\/p>\n

Part one: Countess Lyda will talk about what she has decided to make for dinner and how she arrived at that decision.<\/p>\n

Part two: Duchess Rylyn will talk about Viking age pots, their pros and cons, and general information on how cooking over an open fire is different. Students will be encouraged to handle the pots themselves.\u200b<\/p>\n

Part three: Based on those two things, the class will determine what the best way to make dinner will be.<\/p>\n
