Students will need a simple cross hilted sword simulator and a buckler. For the purposes of this class, a cross hilted sword will work better than a complex hilted metal one.

The Sword and Buckler of Andres Lignitzer
Andres Lignitzer described 6 plays at sword and buckler which were considered good enough to include both attributed and unattributed in other 15th century collections on swordplay. In this class we will endeavor to get through as many of them as time and ability allow. Past experience has show this to be two or three. Students will need a simple cross hilted sword simulator and a buckler. For the purposes of this class, a cross hilted sword will work better than a complex hilted metal one.

The Sword and the Centuries (with apologies to Alfred Hutton)

Throughout the centuries, the sword has been an important weapon and symbol. From the Middle Ages to the end of the sixteenth century, changes in defences and in society produced numerous types of swords. This class will examine a number of these changes and the sword variations that developed. Both changes in the blade and the guard of the sword will be discussed. The emphasis will be on Western Europe and Scandinavia.

2 Strikes from German Longsword

A focus on two strikes from Liechtenauer’s teachings, the wrath strike (Zornhau) and the thwart strike (Zwerchhau).  For each we will learn the foot work, the strike, and a useful option to defend & strike the opponent in turn.  The intent is to practice these two moves thoroughly, not to have a broad review of many moves.  Participants should have at minimum a mask and two-handed sword.  Those with minimum equipment will only practice slowly, those with SCA legal equipment can move up to full speed practice.

Instructor – Eyrny
